Hey guys! For this week’s blog post we’re bringing a piece from one of my favorite categories, “I Am Woman”. In this feature we’re highlighting the amazing Timeka Stevens, where she educates us on the importance of honing our inner beauty and how all women can use it to take full control of their lives!
And men, share this with all the important women in your lives! Your mothers, sisters and friends!
THE BEAUTIFUL YOU
By Timeka Stevens
“The beauty of a girl cannot be mimicked, fabricated or created by human means − it occurs naturally”.
But, what is beauty?
Growing up I was always ridiculed for being ugly and too skinny which led to all sorts of nicknames including alien, plyboard, broomstick, mop-stick just to name a few. Self-hate for me then had grown strong and my frequent prayer to God was to make me beautiful. Like a sinking ship, I absorbed all
those negativities that resulted in a very low self-esteem due to the poor way in which I viewed which I viewed myself, undermining my capabilities and God-given abilities. Sitting and thinking about it now, I smile and thank God for those seemingly horrendous experiences because if I had not gone through them, I wouldn’t be the strong, courageous and confident young woman I am today. Rising above all the negatively impactful ridicules, I now realize I have been a beautiful creation all along. Allowing shallow minded people to define who I am was where I went wrong.
That is the problem we are facing today, where beauty has become a ‘single story’, where it is defined by the outward appearance and what is being portrayed in the media and less of it being in the ‘eyes of the beholder.’ Beauty is subjective and expands far beyond what the naked eyes can see. If one conceives beauty as just being physically like a ‘beautiful flower’, he/she will encounter disappointment as it will definitely fade.
True beauty is timeless and can only be found within. So, I implore you tap into that inner beauty and allow it to radiate beyond you and every path your feet may trod. Decide for yourself what beauty is and do not allow society or social media to formulate that definition for you. Tell yourself you are beautiful in whatever way, shape or form because your perception of yourself is what is most important. Tell yourself that everything you hate about you is actually a blessing from God. Remember to be you no matter what, embrace you and worry not. People will always have an opinion, but don’t you dare give them dominion. It might be difficult searching for who you are, that does not give people a reason to induce an emotional scar. It might be difficult searching, but with God in the midst it comes easier merging. Don’t give up hope in such difficult situation, God always has the solution and will promote you to a higher station. Cry if you may, releasing that which poses as a roadblock in your way and thank your master who has been there since the first day. Much as the rudder guides the direction of a ship, our thoughts guide the direction of our lives.
Tell yourself you are unique, valuable and perfect just the way you are.
